Working to Halt Online Abuse Kid Teen Division logo

What is KTD all about?

KTD is our new Kids/Teen Division that was formed to offer support and guidance to kids and teens under the age of 18 who are being subjected to online bullying, harassment or stalking. This site provides access to legal and law enforcement resources, as well as safety tips for online and offline situations.

Who designed your kewl logo?

Several logo variations were developed by Rashmi, one of our advocates. Then through a convoluted series of steps involving emailing, voting, prodding, cajoling, more emailing and finally more voting, this one was selected by students at Essex High Shool in Vermont.

Hey, if I disagree with you does that mean I am harassing you?

Certainly not! We welcome differing viewpoints. Disagreement is not harassment. Here are some examples:

  • Someone posts a message about why you are the worst thing ever to happen to civilization, that you dress funny or your mother wears army boots. Is that harassment? No.
  • Someone sends you a personal letter stating that WHOA is evil and that you personally deserve to be killed. You then ask the writer to stop contacting you. He or she then sends you 14 more mails stating similar things, but getting more graphic and threatening. THAT is harassment.

How are you different from other kid's help sites?

This site exists under the umbrella of WHOA, a respected online organization that's been around for many years and has a great deal of experience helping people.

What kind of help can you give me?

WHOA-KTD can provide guidance, reassurance and a place to talk to others who have been in the same situation. We'll show you how to try to end the harassment yourself. If that doesn't work, then we'll take steps to try to end it for you. We also have access to many national ISP resources as well as law enforcement and legal personnel.

Aren't these people just whiners?

First off, its only whining if you don't do something about it. Second, there is nothing wrong about education and information. Third, males and females are self-defining. Everyone is different and so is everyone's approach to life's challenges. WHOA-KTD hopes to provide support for all kids and teens, and provide education for the entire Internet community. We don't think that harassment is a minor problem in many cases, and we respect those kids and teens who fight back against the powerlessness that harassment tries to force upon them and others.

Will you just ignore me if I write you a letter of criticism or ask a question?

Every attempt will be made to answer all letters to WHOA-KTD so long as they are sent in the spirit of constructive argument. We do welcome critical arguments and discussions about our policies and the information we provide. We want to create policies and information banks that are reflective of many different kinds of thinking.

I think you left out something important here - how do I ask you to change that?
